Frank Lampard hopes Timo Werner will be fit to face Liverpool

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has backed “real threat” Timo Werner to shake off a dead leg to be fit in time to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Germany hitman Werner impressed on his Premier League debut, winning a penalty as Chelsea eased past Brighton 3-1 at the Amex Stadium.

Jorginho converted the spot-kick that Werner won, with Reece James blasting a fine strike into the top corner and Kurt Zouma adding the third.

Leandro Trossard briefly had Brighton level but Chelsea coasted to the victory, despite showing the obvious effects of the coronavirus-disrupted pre-season.

“I was really pleased with Timo, with Timo I know the qualities he’s going to bring to the team,” said Lampard.

“We saw that with the speed to win the penalty, and the moments where he showed his speed and his qualities as well. He’s going to be a real threat, he’s a very mobile centre forward who can do so many things for us.

“So it was nice, and Timo is one that has had some games, and has had a bit of fitness, and you can see that in the way he was tonight. Timo took a knock when he won the penalty. It’s more of a dead leg, we hope. I wouldn’t think too much in terms of next week there but I’d think it was a dead leg; we’ve got a bit of time for him to get right.”

Werner impressed throughout his top-flight bow with clever off-the-ball movement and his sheer pace.

The former RB Leipzig man was a summer target for Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s men baulked at his £53m release clause, allowing Chelsea the chance to jump in and seal one of this window’s biggest deals.

Werner had his leg heavily iced after the final whistle, but Chelsea still expect him to be ready to take on the Reds this weekend.

Christian Pulisic was not fit in time for Chelsea’s season opener, despite returning to training in the week after hamstring trouble. The USA forward will be a doubt for Sunday’s clash with defending champions Liverpool, but Jorginho should be fine having come off late against Brighton merely through fatigue.

“With Jorginho he was just tired,” said Lampard.

“We’ve had a lot of quarantines at the club, players going away with internationals and we’re not fully fit at the moment. And that’s just the way it is.

“With Christian, he was training with us last week and had a little bit of discomfort a couple of days ago when he was trying to train with us to be in contention for today.

“It would have been a big ask for today, but he has had to take a few steps back so we’ll have to see. That’s one that I don’t have big news on at the minute. We’ll need to wait and see.”

Chelsea rode their luck at times against Brighton, not least when Lewis Dunk nodded wide when unmarked just four yards out.

Insisting the Blues will be ready to ratchet through the gears to host Liverpool, Lampard continued: “We will be better, this is our first game and we’ve only been together as a group for four days, we’ve had all the players together and we’ve had two debuts tonight.

“We showed a lot of good stuff, it wasn’t where we want to be in the end, that will take a bit of time, and we will improve for Liverpool as well. But first game of the season it’s all about getting a win, certainly when you come to a place like Brighton. And I think we did a lot of good things to get that.”

Deflated Brighton boss Graham Potter admitted hoping that injuries to Adam Lallana and Ben White do not wind up too serious.

“I’m not sure, I don’t think Adam’s that bad, but I’m probably guessing; it’s more cramping hopefully,” said Potter.

“Hopefully Ben’s not too bad with his ankle either, hopefully it just needs 24 hours to settle down.

“The margins we need to turn, that’s the challenge. I thought we played well overall, matched Chelsea quite well, especially in the first half.

“We more than deserved the equaliser, I think, but then it was a bit of game management where we got punished for the second. It took the wind out of us a little bit. It’s disappointing to concede three goals overall, and that’s the thing we’re most disappointed with.”

WWE NXT Results—Wednesday, November 4, 2020
Dakota Kai def. Ember Moon

After her star-making performance last week, Raquel Gonzalez seems out of place just standing ringside during a Dakota Kai match. She’s NXT’s version of Wardlow.

WWE wasted very little time taking the shine off a returning Ember Moon with this shocking results

KUSHIDA def. Cameron Grimes

Matches like this can go a long way in reminding WWE that Cameron Grimes is more than a midcard comedy heel with a funny accent.

The fact that KUSHIDA seems like he’s in a holding pattern tells me the same can be said about current NXT champion Finn Balor. (Results)

Drake Maverick and Killian Dain vs. Ever-Rise; Pat McAfee Calls out Undisputed Era

Pat McAfee and his new crew received the picture-in-picture treatment for their entrance, right up until they actually hit the ring.

NXT could have found better chum bait than the rising team of Drake Maverick and Killian Dain for this segment.

Pete Dunn’s expression didn’t change throughout this entire segment. (Results)

The promo after this match marks the first time in my life I ever chose a Pat McAfee promo over a Young Bucks match.

Toni Storm def. Shotzi Blackheart

They need to raise the stakes of this Punk Rock-centric match and ban the loser from wearing Doc Martens.

This match had no business on free TV.

I would have been perfectly fine with the double-countout they teased. Shotzi deserved it.

Shotzi Blackheart looked quite foolish as a grown babyface sobbing over a Fisher Price toy. (Results)

Thatch as Thatch Can—Live Exhibition

All things considered, Timothy Thatcher is really an engaging teacher. I actually learned something during this segment.

Timothy Thatcher’s reasoning that somebody tapping for their lives (during an exhibition!) could be luring him into a false sense of security is as cynical as it gets.

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Velveteen Dream

Velveteen Dream is a big fan of NWO tribute merchandise.

Tommaso Ciampa and KUSHIDA one-on-one has such potential to be a great NXT TakeOver match.

It’s fair to question whether or not Velveteen Dream will win another match in 2020. Good thing he’s still young, because at this point, Dream may not win for the rest of his 20s. (Results)

Monday Night Raw results 3rd November 2020

Braun Strowman def. Keith Lee and Sheamus via pinfall after a running powerslam on Sheamus. As Lee was setting up for a Spirit Bomb on Strowman, Sheamus ran in and hit a Brogue Kick. That allowed Strowman to catch Sheamus with the running powerslam for the win, qualifying him for the Survivor Series team. After the match, Styles encouraged the team to shake hands and work together, leading Strowman to tell Lee they need to put their differences aside because he wants to win at the pay-per-view. Strowman and Lee shook hands and Sheamus and Strowman hugged after briefly arguing, but Sheamus turned and hit a Brogue Kick, knocking Strowman from the ring. Lee then clotheslined Sheamus to the floor and Styles dropkicked Lee out of the ring next before complaining that the team couldn’t get along. Later in the show, Sheamus approached McIntyre and pitched them joining up again — starting with McIntyre on Team Raw, but McIntyre politely refused the offer. (Monday Night Raw)

Bray Wyatt and Alexa Bliss hosted a Firefly Fun House segment. The two focused on Orton with Wyatt saying The Fiend couldn’t forget what happened when Orton burned down the Wyatt Compound in 2017. Bliss then did a “magic trick” where she appeared to spit blood. Bliss was also confronted backstage by Nikki Cross later in the show. Cross was scared off when Bliss looked up at her with glowing eyes. (Monday Night Raw)

Jeff Hardy def. Elias in a guitar on a pole match. Elias took a shot to the nose that drew a little blood early in the match and responded by tossing a stool to knock Hardy off the top rope as he climbed the ropes to retrieve the guitar. That only delayed the inevitable as Hardy eventually grabbed the guitar and jumped from the top rope to smash it on Elias’ back and score the pinfall victory. (Monday Night Raw)

Women’s Tag Team Championship — Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler (c) def. Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke via submission to retain the titles when Baszler locked Brooke in the Kirifuda Clutch. Lana came to ringside to watch the other members of Team Raw in the match, drawing the ire of Jax and Baszler immediately. Lana would distract Baszler multiple times, including as she tried to lock Brooke in the Kirifuda Clutch the first time. That allowed Brooke to score a roll-up for a near fall. After Baszler kicked out, she locked in the hold for the finish. | Nia Jax def Lana via pinfall after a Samoan drop. Jax dominated the match, brutalizing Lana from the opening bell and never letting up. Jax finally ended the match with a Samoan drop. After the match, Jax returned to the ring, calling Lana pathetic before the weekly Samoan drop through the announce table.

Bobby Lashley def. R-Truth via submission with the Hurt Lock in a non-title match. Truth told Lashley that they’re both champions and there’s no need for either man to get hurt. Truth then laid down and waited to be pinned, but Lashley wasn’t having it, scoring a near-immediate win with the Hurt Lock. | 24/7 Championship — Drew Gulak def. R-Truth (c) to win the title. Gulak tried to run in after the match and pin Truth for the 24/7 title, but Lashley slammed him and locked in the Hurt Lock. Lashley then threw Gulak’s unconscious body on top of Truth for the pin.

The Hurt Business (Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin) def. The New Day via pinfall (c) in a non-title match after Benjamin hit Paydirt on Xavier Woods. The lengthy match began after New Day interrupted a VIP Lounge segment by The Hurt Business. The two teams went back-and-forth until a wild sprint finish that saw Benjamin hit Paydirt to allow Alexander to score the pinfall.

Ricochet def. Tucker Knight via pinfall after hitting Recoil. Ricochet won very quickly, but Mustafa Ali had come to ringside before the match. Retribution jumped into the ring after the match, with T-Bar throwing Ricochet from the ring before attacking Knight. Ricochet was then thrown back in the ring, where Retribution circled him. Ricochet fought back, but the numbers game caught up and Ali told him, “No sin is forgiven, until it is punished.”
