Soyombo steps down as UNILAG’s acting VC flliqqa

Professor Omololu Soyombo, appointed Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, UNILAG, 10 days ago by the Governing Council of the institution, on Saturday stepped down from office.

In a statement signed by him, the Professor of Sociology, said he took the step following the setting up of a Visitation Panel to the university by the Federal Government.

While commending the staff and students of the university for their support, he reiterated that he accepted the offer because of his belief that it was a call to serve the university.

He called on all stakeholders to allow peace to reign and move the university forward.

Soyombo noted that with the cooperation of all, the university would retain its position as the university of first choice in the country. Recall that the Wale Babalakin-led Governing Council appointed Soyombo as acting VC at its meeting in Abuja penultimate Wednesday where it stated that Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe had been removed as the VC of the institution.

The development led to a series of protests for and against and the government late on Friday night asked Babalakin and Ogundipe to step aside, while a Visitation Panel would be set up to probe the affairs of the institution from 2017 till date. The government also directed the Senate of the university to appoint an Acting VC in accordance with the university law.

He wrote “Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any citizen. It is better to gain honour at the cost of losing power than to gain power at the cost of losing honour.

“At any point in time, the power of love should matter more than the love of power.

This is my philosophy. I have lived it. It has brought great peace to both my beloved nation and I. And I recommend it to all leaders facing challenging situations, either in government, or at the polls, or even in their dealings with fellow political actors.”

China temporarily restrains Nigeria due to codvid-19 fears

China has temporarily restrained entry of Nigerians into the country due to covid-19 worries.

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria on Thursday, raised concerns over the resurfacing of the corona virus. The embassy made it clear that they would no longer issue certified health declaration form for non Chinese citizens residing in the country.

According to the statement “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, China has decided to temporarily suspend entry into China by non-Chinese nationals in Nigeria holding visas or residence permits still valid at the time of this announcement.”

People on diplomatic, courtesy, missions and staffs working on a planes, ships and ships are exempted in this new restriction and those needing to travel to china for emergency reasons will be granted visa.

According to National Centre for Disease Control corona virus cases stood at 63,328, death,1155 and recoveries, 59,675.

Recall, Corona Virus broke out first in China, but has managed the virus effectively, this new development is a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the virus into China.

FRSC set to carry Guns-Rep

The House of Representatives in Abuja on Thursday disclosed in the corps 2020 budget performance and 2021 budget defence, that the federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) will carry guns for them to discharge their duties effectively.

Mr Akinfolarin Mayowa stated clearly that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to carry firearms. He pleaded that the act should be implemented to enable the FRSC to discharge their duties with ease and effectively.

He added that committee will meet with Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation to discuss this issue with him, also write to the president pleading with him to implement the law.

Contributing, a member of the committee said that the committee would also seek audience with the Inspector General of the Police, Mohammed Adamu to seek his support too.

Boboye Oyeyemi, FRSC Corps Marshall, lamented there were several scenarios where motorist threatened corps members on duty, the firearm will serve as a protection for them to checkmate activities of mischievous road users.
